Aimed at practicing acute care physicians, the UBC IM POCUS Basics Course is a 1 or 2-day hands-on workshop focusing on high-yield basic POCUS techniques. The course features a flipped classroom approach to maximize hands-on-probe time, a group of expert clinician faculty, and a carefully crafted curriculum.

The course is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to incorporate basic POCUS into their routine practice, including assessment of common clinical problems:

  • The mythical “volume status”

  • Undifferentiated hypoxia and hypotension

  • Acute kidney injury and urinary retention

  • Presence of abdominal free fluid


Course content

  • Vascular ultrasound: IVC and JVP

  • Lung ultrasound

  • Abdominal ultrasound: kidneys, bladder, and free fluid

  • Basic cardiac ultrasound

  • Pearls, pitfalls, and case-based integration
